Teaching Dog To Sit And Stay
Once you get your dog into a Sit position (follow the Teaching Dog To Sit), you can turn into a Sit And Stay position.
Two main points in teaching dog to Sit And Stay:
1. Duration – Your dog is able to hold into a Sit position for longer periods of time.
a. Get your dog into a sit position and then count two before you (click or) give her a treat.
b. Gradually increase the time your dog to hold for several seconds before you (click and) treat.
c. Once your dog can hold for 10 seconds, verbally said “Stay” and give her a hand signal (as a Stay signal). Remember this signal because you are going to use it overtime. Some people use a flat open palm toward your dog.
d. Increase the time gradually between (click and) treat, let your dog wait and think of when the next click is.
e. Practice in a different place and add distraction. When you teach dog in a new place, always start teach her from the beginning. Let your dog be familiar first.
2. Distance – Your dog is able to hold into a Sit position while you move further away.
a. Get your dog into a sit position and take a small step right and return (slowly) immediately. Watch your dog whether she can maintain the position, if she does then (click and) treat. If she moves, then take her into a Sit position again and take a smaller step.
b. Gradually increase distance and keep moving slowly. Do not move too fast, it causes your dog run to you. If your dog is able to maintain her position, click and treat.
c. As you gradually increase the distance, add some duration elements too. Leave your dog for a while in Sit position, while you are going to cross the room. Start practicing it slowly when you combine both duration and distance.
