Teaching Dog To Sit
Teaching dog to sit involves luring your dog to sit before you give her a (click and) reward. The important part is do not let your dog becomes dependent upon the treats. Thus, you have to fade the treat presence quickly and make sure your dog becomes reliable and understands the concept of sitting.
Follow these simple steps to teach your dog to Sit:
1. Hold a reward slowly above your dog’s nose and say “Sit” while you bring it back slowly over her head.
2. When your dog’s bottom touches the ground, (click and) treat.
3. If your dog does not want to Sit, practice it against a wall so she does not have enough room to go too far.
4. Practice it for several times until your dog understand your command.
5. Now without using the treat, direct your hand the same way in step 1 above and entice your dog to sit, do it for several times before (click and) treat. Started from two Sits before (click and) treat. Repeat it for several times and increase it to three, four, five Sits and so forth.
6. When your dog becomes reliable, practice it in various places around the house until your dog is making no mistakes when responding.
7. Start practicing in a new place such as pet stores, the park, on the street, office, etc.
Note: If your dog fails at some point, go back to the previous steps and help your dog get into the right position. Always do it in a consistent way and be patient.
