Teaching Dog To Lie Down And Stay

Before you start to train your dog to Lie Down And Stay, first thing to be aware of is the surface. A short coated dog prefers to lie down on the carpet or towel instead of tile or hardwood floor. You should pay attention to the floor temperature too. The temperature usually goes down during winter on tile or hardwood floor, it makes uncomfortable for your dog.

Some techniques to teach your dog to Lie Down And Stay:

1. Start with your dog in Sit position. Lure your dog with a treat to her nose and bring it down slowly to the floor. If your dog follows the treat by lowering her head, (click and) treat.
2. Repeat it for several times as well as increase the duration while your dog stays in her position lying on the floor.
3. If your dog can do it for six times without mistake, now fade the lure out. Use your hand (without a treat) and make the same hand motion. Once your dog follows your hand and lies down, (click and) treat. If your dog does not want to follow, repeat the technique by using a treat again.
4. After your dog is able to Lie Down And Stay without a treat for several times with no mistakes, it is time to take it on the road. Go to the park or a place with more distractions and practice it there. If your dog has too much distraction and does not want to follow, go back to the first step by using the treat. Once she can handle it, fade the lure out.

Note: When your dog has problem to lie down, do not push or pull your dog to lie down. Pushing or pulling her into a position turns your dog’s brain off. She does not want to think and lets you do the work.
