Teaching Dog To Come When Called
Teaching your dog to Come when you call has more to do with your relationship with her. Your dog has to know who is in control and she has to believe that you control everything good that your dog must check in with you often so she can get the access of everything she wants. You have to build a boundary and be a strong leader.
Follow these simple techniques to teach your dog to Come when called:
1. Go to a slightly distracting area with the leash on your dog. Keep her from everything she wants, when she looks back at you, (click and) treat. Repeat it for several times.
2. Move on to a more distracting place or go closer to the stimulant of distraction. If your dog does not look back at you in thirty second or less, move further away from the distraction until she looks back at you, then (click and) treat. Verbally say this behavior “Come” so she now what to expect to do when you say “Come.”
3. Practice it several times. When your dog becomes predictable to look back at you, run backward when you click and give the treat close to your feet so your dog will come to catch you.
4. Move on by changing distraction and increasing the intensity of it. Get closer to the distraction and increase the distance between you and your dog. If she cannot handle it, go away from distraction and keep practicing.
Note: Always be patient and keep practicing. It is better to run a frequent short lessons than marathon sessions.
